Kate, over at Marsh Mellow Goodness, decided to share her work environment today, and I thought it was kind of fun, so...here's where I park myself on a daily basis!
That beautiful orchid was a gift from on my vendors. I was having a really bad day, and she called and delivered some more bad news. She showed up later with that orchid and told me she thought she'd made me cry. [for the record, she hadn't] In this picture, you can also see the walker that we have had in our office for over a year. A patient left it behind, and told us she'd come back for it. I'm guessing she's not.
Here you can see my water bottle and the folder I use on a daily basis. That folder contains all the important phone numbers I need - nursing facilities, home care agencies, insurance companies. It is like my bible. I cannot do my job without it. You can also see my respirator mask. I need to use that when I go speak to patients who are on isolation precautions for things like TB and the flu. Yup, the flu. You also get a good look at my calender, which (if you zoom in) has phone numbers and notes scribbled ALL over it. On top of my calender is where I keep/write on my daily census report (flipped over to protect patient identities).
Here is a close-up of my bulletin board. It's got pictures of Matt, my sister, my best friend Steph, my mom and Jeff, and my dad. It also has some silly comic strips from my friends, plus a thank-you card from one of my patients' families. It also has some Dove wrappers - one says "You're allowed to do nothing." Another one says, "Love is always the perfect gift." And the last one says, "It's not onlyokay to be different, it's fantastic!" It feels mildly sacriligious to be putting Dove wrappers on my wall (Dove is a Mars product. Remember, kids, I'm from Hershey), but...they're just too good to not look at every now and then! There are also some recognition certificates from coworkers, and a note about a patient's funny name. Because my coworkers and I are 10.
Here you can see our messy shelves. They're over my desk, but all 3 of us in the office use them. They contain mostly brochures from the various facilities and agencies we deal with. Plus some other crap.
The social work button. I sometimes have to fight the urge to actually point at this when some people are in our office.
This is my top drawer in my desk. It houses my pens (they have to be hidden - we get too many nice pens from our vendors, and they tend to disappear if they're on my desk), my business cards, my tea, and the office's supply of cab vouchers and SEPTA tokens. Cab vouchers and SEPTA tokens are the baine of my existence as a hospital social worker. A tip for all my blog friends out there - if you go to the hospital, have a ride home. Just because we have vouchers, doesn't mean we give them out, nilly-willy. Every time I give one out, I hear about it from my boss.
Kate talked about her food drawer. I don't have a food drawer. But I do have a shoe drawer! I walk 8 blocks each way to get from the train station to the hospital and back. And I don't do that in heels. So I wear my sneakers to and from work, and change into my heels when I get to work. Oh, and those fuzzy purple things are my USB boots - they have a warming strip in the bottom of them and when you plug into the USB port in your computer, it warms up the strips and you have instant toasty feet!
So that's it. My office. My desk. What does your work space look like?

Chasing Cars - I Wanna Dance with Somebody
Once the dinner and the cake cutting and the traditional dances were out of the way, it was time to hit the dance floor. And our DJ made sure that the dance floor was on FI-YAH! I remember only 2 slow songs playing all night long.
Of course, the inevitable dance circle started...
Notice someone conspicuously missing? Yeah, me too. Matt is not a dance-floor kind of guy, so he was off being the congenial host...
Coming up, some of our own traditions...

Fun Fact Friday
It's Easter weekend, so let's discuss some fun Easter facts!
~ How do you eat your chocolate bunny? 76% of Americans go ears first. 5% eat the feet first, and 4% eat the tail first. I know that's only 85% - I don't know what the other 15% do. Just look at it?
~ Americans buy more than 700 Peeps during Easter season. Side note: when Matt used to drink coffee, he would drop a peep in it instead of sugar. He called it a Peepacino. I think he should market it to Starbucks.
~ 16 billion jelly beans are made for Easter. I wonder of that includes Bertie Botts Every Flavor bean.
~ Pretzels used to be associated with Easter because the twist in the middle resembled arms crossing in prayer.
~ The White House has hosted an Easter Egg Roll since 1978
~ The world's largest jar of jelly beans weighed 6,050 pounds. I might want to swim in that.
~ What do you go for in your Easter basket? 76% of kids go right for the chocolate bunny, followed by 18% for marshmallow treats, 17% for malted milk balls, and 16% for jelly beans. I feel like that doesn't add up. Anyway, I dove right for the peanut butter eggs and/or the Cadbury creme eggs. Ugh, I'm drooling.
Have a great Easter, everyone!

Chasing Cars - Kissing Fun
Ok, so our DJ is a genius. When we first met with him, he asked us how we felt about the whole clinking glasses and kissing thing. I have always hated it. If I could have had my way, we would have had plastic cups and silverware, just to avoid the clinking glasses. The idea of being told when to kiss my husband just annoyed me. I'll kiss him when I want to kiss him, dammit! So when I mentioned this to Mike, he suggested we make a game out of it. He said that usually it curbs the clinking pretty quickly. So I was all over it.
His suggestion was that we come up with a list of couples who will be at the wedding and who would be fun enough to participate in the game. We provide that list to him at the start of the reception. When people start clinking their glasses, he would randomly choose one couple from the list and call them out. That couple would then have to kiss each other - creatively as they wanted to - and we would have to copy them. I loved it. Our friends and family are super-fun and I knew they would really enjoy trying to "show us up."
So after our first dance, we took our seats. Of course, almost immediately, people started clinking their glasses. Mike announced the rules of the game and picked his first couple, who just so happened to be BM Steph and GM Matt. If I had been able to pick a couple to start off the game, I would have picked them. So GM Matt hoisted his chair up over his head, and ordered BM Steph to take a seat. And then he proceeded to fully makeout with her...
Our turn!
Almost immediately after we sat down, people started clinking again. This time, Mike called on Matt's cousin and her husband. They took to the dance floor, he kissed her hand, then dipped her for a big finish.
Up next was Matt's friend from high school, Braden, and his wife Stephanie. He stood her up, tied his tie over her eyes, then had their other friend, Jim, stand in his place. Stephanie nearly kissed Jim, and Braden stepped in to rescue her.
Our turn! Matt picked his brother, Mike, as his stand-in.
Finally, my dad's friends, Doug and Kim. We actually weren't paying attention at this point, so I'm not too sure what they did. I just saw Kim dancing around a lot and then they kissed, so that's what we did. I'm pretty sure we missed something crucial in their "act," though.
I'm so glad that Mike suggested the kissing game, and I think our guests had a lot of fun with it. It kept people entertained and gave the whole thing a sort of interactive feel.
Coming up, I can't get my butt off the dance floor!

Chasing Cars - The Traditions
I mentioned that Matt and I ate our entire meal. But we did kind of rush through it. We wanted to be able to say hello to our guests. The room where our reception was held, the bus gallery in the basement, was set up like this:
18 tables of 8, split in the middle by the dance floor. It worked out - numbers-wise - to put our friends on our side of the dance floor, and our family and parents' friends on the far side. Unfortunately, we started on our side of the dance floor when we started saying hello to everyone, and we never made it over to the other side. Oops.
Anyway, while we were greeting our last table on our friends' side, David came to tell us it was time for our family photos. We had requested a big photo of each of our extended families. It's so rare that all of our family members are together, in one place, so we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.
I cannot tell you why Matt and I aren't sitting together. It just happened so quickly, everyone was in the same room, we smashed together, and snapped the pictures Done.
While this was happening, the DJ started playing "You Can Call Me Al" by Paul Simon. This is a favorite of me and my sister, so we took the opportunity to reenact the music video. We also did this at my bachelorette party.
Yep. We're huge goofballs. We also took a moment to get a picture with Matt's Pop Lou and his girlfriend. Pop Lou passed away in February, and I know it meant a lot to Matt that he was able to make it. I'm so glad we took a few seconds to get this photo.
Up next, it was time to cut the cake.
And the last of the traditions (for us) - the Parent Dances. Up first, my dad and I danced to "Father and Daughter," by Paul Simon. We've always listened to Paul Simon together, and when I heard this song, there was no doubt in my mind.
Matt and his mom chose to dance to "You'll Be In My Heart," by Phil Collins. It's a really sweet song, and a great option for the Mother/Son dance.
When the song ended, Matt's dad and brothers joined them on the dance floor for a group hug. It was a very touching moment.
Up next, pictures from the Kissing Game and the dance floor gets hot!
