Chasing Cars - Taking a Ride

After our portraits at the hotel, us girls piled into the trolley and took a ride over the church for more pictures.

The hotel was located in the parking area for the museum (our reception venue), so one of the girls snapped a photo of the museum's sign...

The photographers didn't ride over with us, but that doesn't mean the ride wasn't well-documented!

I had managed to remain composed for most of the day so far.  Until...

Yup.  I totally had a moment on the trolley ride.  All of a sudden, the day was very real.  I was getting married!

(the photos in the previous series were from my girls)

We arrived at the church and took a few more fun pictures.

Still gabbing.

This felt so weird, but it's one of my favorite pictures!
My sister was singing something to me
Are we a bunch of sex-pots, or what?

Soon, it was time for us to disappear inside before the trolley came back with the boys.  Oh yeah, they're coming up!

Workplace Dress Codes

The dress code where I work has always been a bit...ambiguous.  I work in a hospital that's part of a pretty major health system.  Even though it's part of the big health system, it feels like a small community hospital.  It serves mainly a population that comes from the geographical area immediately surrounding the hospital.  Because of this small, community feel, the staff are generally pretty nice, happy, and good at their jobs.  And also because of this commnity feel, the dress code has not been too "stuffy."  The only people who can be seen wearing suits on a daily basis are the people at the very top of administration - the CEO, CFO, CNO, etc.  Everyone else dresses pretty business casual, and some on the more casual end of that (guilty!).  All along, we've been told no sneakers, no capris, no tank tops.  But that's been the extent of our no-nos; otherwise, pretty much anything goes.  We've even been allowed to wear open-toe shoes.  It's always surprised me, but I went with it.  During the summer, I can be seen in strappy sandals most of the week.  Love. It.

But a new administration is in place and they are shaking things up.  Soon, we will no longer be allowed to wear open-toe shoes.  Even peep-toes will be outlawed.  We will not be allowed to wear khakis.  A couple of years ago, we were given the option to purchase fleeces with the hospital logo and our department/title on them - we'll no longer be allowed to wear those, either.  If I get cold, I can put on a white sweater.  Those are not absolutely terrible changes.  I'll miss my peep-toes, but I'll live.  I'm a little annoyed that just a year ago I spent $35 on a fleece that I can't wear anymore, but I'll get over it.

But it's not just the professional staff who are getting changes.  The nurses are being handed a pretty shitty deal:
This is actually titled "Old Fashioned Nurse"
All white scrubs.  Yup, nurses, who have to deal with body fluids and puke and blood and whatever else.  They have to wear white scrubs and white sneakers.  Plain white with nothing on them.  What a pain in the butt.  Not only do they have to buy all new scrubs, but they will have to buy all new underwear - there's only certain things you can wear under white scrubs that won't scream "I'm wearing panties!"

The new CNO based this decision on a survey done in 2006 that found that people feel that they got better, more professional care from nurses in all-white uniforms.  What she failed to mention is that the survey results were actually that 55% of men over the age of 70 reported that; other age groups reported no difference in care.  And another study, done in January 2011, found that across all age groups, people responded that nurses in colorful scrubs with small print/pattern delivered the best care and were the most empathetic.  But the CNO chose not to use that study, and instead used the 5-year-old study based on a survey of 800 patients from one hospital.  Hmmm...

Anyway, needless to say, the nurses here are not happy.  Many are starting to band together and come up with ways to fight this.  Several have written letters.  I can't really say I blame them.  While I do love my white pants in the summertime, I would not want to wear them day in and day out, on days when I have my period (flashback to middle school period checks!)....and certainly not if I were spending my day cleaning up people's piss and shit.  I intend to fully support the nurses, however I can.

What do you think?  Nurses in white: a throwback to the 40s, a dirty male fantasy, or actual better care?

Chasing Cars - Bridal Portraits

We took bridal and bridal party pictures at the hotel and at the church.  I'm really glad for the dual locations, because it gave us lots of options.  Up first?  Hotel...

Anniversaries

Matt and I are quickly approaching our 6-month anniversary (say whaaaat?).  Our dear friends, BM Steph and GM Matt, gifted us a night in New York City at the Waldorf Hotel on the night of our 6-month anniversary as a wedding gift.  I am so excited.  I love New York City.  They also got us 2 tickets to see Avenue Q, which I have seen and absolutely love, and I have been telling Matt about for years.  I can't wait to take him to see it!  We're planning to take the MegaBus to the city on Saturday, spend the day exploring (and maybe catch up with some friends) then have dinner and go see the show Saturday night.  I'm hoping that after the show we'll be able to find a cool bar to have some drinks in - maybe a rooftop bar, even.  [any suggesions would be appreciated!]  On Sunday, we're going to do the Natural History Museum before we get the bus back to Philadelphia.  Matt's never been there, and I haven't been there in probably 10 or 12 years.

We've talked about taking a trip every year for our anniversary.  Given our experience on our honeymoon, we're a little leary about taking trips to the Caribbean, but there's always the idea of waiting a few months or going on our 1/2-iversaries.  (c:

For our one year anniversary, we're plannign to go to Florida.  My parents own a house in The Villages, which is only about an hour from Orlando.  Sure, it's a retirement community.  But there are pools, restaurants, bars, and golf courses.  Free place to stay?  Yes, please.  Like I said, it's only an hour from Orlando, so we can take a couple of trips to the parks.  We just did Disney a few years ago, so this time we'll probably hit Universal Studios and the Universal theme park.  And you know what's at Universal, right??

Harry!!!!  Matt's original proposal plan was to take me to Florida and propose at Hogwarts.  It opened later than expected, and Matt got impatient.  So instead, we're going for our anniversary.  I've read lots of reviews that say it's crowded and busy and the lines to get into the stores are crazy long.  I don't care.  Also, I'm hoping that by October, when it's been open for 2+ years, the novelty will have worn off a bit.  Not likely, but I'm being optimistic.  I cannot wait.  I love the books, love the movies, and can't wait to see it all "in real life."

I'm trying to convince Matt that we should renew our vows at Hogwarts.  Maybe even Dumbledore or Harry could preside over the ceremony!  He's, umm...hesitant.

What did you do or are you planning for your First Anniversary?

Chasing Cars - Pretty Time!

The girls spent the morning at the salon gettin our hair did and our faces made up.  Steele Salon was more than accommodating, and we had a great time.  We were there for probably 3 hours, just hanging out and having some good quality girl time.

BM Abriel had just had a baby in September, so Baby C joined us at the salon for the morning.  Side note: BM Abriel and her commitment to our wedding and to our friendship was totally amazing.  Baby C had not yet gotten into a good sleep schedule, so she had to have been exhausted.  But she put on a big fat smile and never once complained.

I was one of the last to get started.  My stylist was my friend Rachel.  We've been friends since high school, and I didn't even considering having anyone else do my hair.

After everyone was pretty-fied, we headed over the hotel.  This is when things kicked into high gear.  We had a few minutes to get something to eat (and yes, I did eat!) before the flowers showed up and the photographers showed up and suddenly...it was time to get dressed!!

The girls started getting dressed before me, so that they would be ready to go when the photographers showed up.

I'm not sure what was happening here, but I look puzzled!
In the meantime, Matt's best man's wife delivered his gift to me.

I was clearly surprised
The waterproof digital video camera I'd been bugging Matt about buying

I got my dress off the hanger and put it most of the way on by myself in the bathroom, but walked out holding it up so that my sister could zip me in.  My dress was from the Anne Barge La Fleur collection (style LF 158).  I was so excited to finally put this pretty thing on and wear it all night.  It was comfortable and fun and so perfectly me.

All dressed, and my girls started helping me with the finishing touches.

All dressed and ready to go.  But first, some portraits...

Worst April Fool's Day Joke Ever

Alternative title: Why My Family Hates April Fool's Day, Especially My Poor Mother

(source)
Alright, so I was born in 1979.  March 31, 1979.  (Don't bother doing the math.  I turned 32 yesterday.  And damn proud of it.)  If any of you were alive and old enough to care about the news, you may remember that 1979 is the year that the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Middletown, PA had a near-catastrophic problem.  The reactors nearly melted down, which would have caused a hydrogen bubble to burst and would have caused radioactive material to be thrown into the air which woudl have caused everyone living near the plant to die*.  ANYway.  The problem started on March 28 and escalated quickly.  By the evening of March 30, residents of the area were trying to decide whether or not to evacuate.  Read here if you want to see the whole timeline of the event.

My parents were some of these residents.  My mom had already contacted a family member in Pittsburgh to see if they could come out there; Aunt Becky had spoken to her OB and he was willing to deliver my mom's baby (me) if necessary.  In the meantime, back in Central PA, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission had warned pregnant women to stay indoors.  But my mom was past her due date (see?  I was late from birth) and knew that probably sometime in the next few days, she'd have to leave the house.  She called her doctor and told him of her plan to go to Pittsburgh.  He told her, "If you try to leave now, I guarantee you, you will have your baby on the Turnpike.  Stay put."  So she and my dad packed a suitcase and decided, like thousands of others, to wait for Governor Thornberg's press conference and then hit the road if he said conditions looked bad.  He was supposed to come on at 8pm, but didn't.  By 10pm, he still hadn't come on, and my mom started having contractions.  They went to the hospital and I arrived at 5:11am on March 31.  That day, the size of the hydrogen bubble had decreased and the NRC felt that there was no imminent danger of a meltdown.  Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Then, April 1.  April Fool's Day.  A nurse walks into my mom's room, looking all panicked, and says "The hydrogen bubble doubled in size overnight.  Everyone is leaving.  The doctors are leaving!" and ran out of the room.  So there is my poor mother, 26 years old, with a 24-hour old newborn, being told that everyone was evacuating the area and that TMI was going to kill everyone.*  A few minutes later, the nurse comes in and says "April Fools!  Everything is fine!"

Worst. Joke. Ever.  If I were my mom, I would have had that nurse fired.  But it's a well-known fact that my mom is a better person than I am.  So she just let it go.

And that, my friends, is why April Fool's Day is not a popular holiday in my family.

*This might be an exaggeration.  I was not exactly paying attention to detail.
